Dougga: Best-Preserved Roman City in Africa (UNESCO Guide)
Dougga: Tunisia's Greatest Archaeological Treasure
Dougga (ancient Thugga) is widely considered the best-preserved Roman city in North Africa. Perched on a hillside overlooking the fertile Medjerda valley, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is more complete and more atmospheric than anything in Libya, Algeria, or Morocco.
Why Dougga is special
Unlike Carthage (which was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt), Dougga was never a major target for conquest. The result is that its Roman buildings survived remarkably intact for 2,000 years.
Key monuments
1. The Capitol (166 AD)
The most iconic building — a perfectly proportioned Roman temple with tall Corinthian columns, dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. The postcard image of Dougga.
2. The Theatre
A 3,500-seat Roman theatre built into the hillside, still used for performances during the annual Dougga Festival. The acoustics are stunning.
3. The Baths of Licinius
Large, well-preserved Roman bathhouse with underfloor heating systems (hypocausts) still visible.
4. Libyo-Punic Mausoleum
One of the few pre-Roman monuments in Tunisia still standing. A tower tomb from the 2nd century BC — older than the Roman city itself.
